Tooele girls suffer two tough losses

Freshman Kennedy Searle led her team in scoring during Tooele’s Jan. 9 loss to the Cottonwood Colts. Searle scored 10 points in addition to three rebounds. The girls team’s record currently sits at 5-7 overall.

Tooele’s girls basketball team suffered two tough losses last week, which resulted in the team going on a three-game losing streak.

On Jan. 9, the Buffaloes headed to Cottonwood High to play the Colts, in a game highlighted by two low-scoring quarters that ultimately led to a 56-34 defeat.

After a relatively close 18-11 first quarter, Tooele’s offense suffered a hit when the team only mustered six points to Cottonwood’s 18. Although the Buffaloes outscored the Colts 13-9 in the third, bringing the score to 45-30, another underwhelming fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

While the Colts put up 11 points in the fourth, Tooele was only able to score four and the game ended with the final score at 56-34. Despite the loss, many players had relatively good games.

Leading the Buffaloes was freshman Kennedy Searle, who scored 10 points in addition to three rebounds. Senior Josie Kennedy nearly earned a double-double, scoring nine points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Next up for the Buffaloes girls was a home game against the Murray Spartans last Friday.

Things started slowly for Tooele, as a 17-7 score in favor of the Spartans put the Buffaloes behind the eight ball early. A 19-13 second quarter, led by the home team, closed the gap to 30-26 at the half.

The Buffaloes were unable to overcome Murray after the score was brought to 46-37 in the third, as the team was outscored 15-9 in the last frame to ultimately fall 61-46. The loss brought the team’s record to 5-7 overall, with a 1-3 record in the region.

This week Tooele squares off against Hillcrest High Wednesday night, as they host the 0-14 team at 7 p.m. After that, the Buffaloes return to action Jan. 22 in a home game against Park City.
