Basketball briefs, Dec. 13

Sophomore Saydee Thornton and the rest of the Cowboys girls team improved their record to 6-1 after defeating Stansbury on Dec. 7 at home.

Boys basketball 

• Tooele High split its two games last week, winning 64-61 in a road game against Grantsville and dropping a 68-53 contest to Delta High. In the win against the Cowboys, the Buffaloes’ 21-point fourth quarter push was not enough to overcome Grantsville. The team’s record now sits at 2-2 ahead of its Wednesday game at Kearns High.

Leading the team for Tooele in the win against Grantsville was senior Ethan Rogers, who recorded 22 points followed by senior Dillon Polson who posted 19 points. Junior Crew Lewis led the Buffaloes in both rebounds and assists, pulling down six boards and making six assists. Senior Talon Shirley led the team in steals with two.

The Stansbury Stallions fell in both of its road games last week, bringing the team’s overall record to 0-5 as it prepares for its Dec. 15 home matchup against Hunter High. 

• Stansbury started the week with a close 47-44 loss to Grantsville High and followed it up with a 69-53 loss against Taylorsville High.

Girls basketball

• The Grantsville Cowboys girls basketball team extended its winning streak to three last week, with victories over Manti and Stansbury. On Dec. 5, the Cowboys 

Not to be outdone, Grantsville followed up that performance with a 74-25 victory over the Stallions. After holding Stansbury to only two points in the first quarter with a 19-2 score, the Cowboys outscored their opponent 55 to 23 over the next three frames.

Following the win, four Grantsville players finished in double digits as junior Avery Allred led with 22 and junior Baylee Lowder finished with 19. Juniors Kodee Williams and Afton Orgill finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Allred also led the team in steals with eight, followed closely by Lowder with seven. Williams finished above all in assists with six, while Orgill pulled down the most rebounds with five. 

The victories this week brings the Cowboys record to 6-1. Up next for Grantsville is a Dec. 19 road game against Syracuse High.

• Tooele High earned its first win of the season last week, coming in the form of a 48-35 victory over Granger High on Dec. 7. During the week, the Buffaloes split their games by dropping a 66-49 contest to Kearns two days prior.

In the win over Granger, senior Josie Kennedy posted 19 points, with freshman Kennedy Searle right behind her with 12 points. Kennedy also led in rebounds with nine, Searle led in steals with four and senior Ciana Rolle led the team in assists with four.

Tooele’s record currently stands at 1-3 ahead of a Thursday night road game against Park City. Their next home match is next week on Dec. 19, when they host Logan High. The game will tip off at 12 p.m.

• Ahead of their 74-25 loss to Grantsville last Thursday, the Stansbury Stallions girls basketball team dropped a 56-42 game to Taylorsville High on Dec. 5 on the road. The loss brought the team’s record to 0-5 ahead of this Thursday’s match at Morgan High. Starting Dec. 20, Stansbury has a two-game road trip against Hillcrest and Canyon View. 

On Dec. 28, the team returns home to host Dixie High during an 11 a.m. game.
